Florida has a reputation for its discriminatory laws and policies, like 2022’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which barred instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for grades K-12, and a 2024 abortion ban. The queer community has every reason to feel distrustful of state legislators, but my own experiences in Florida have always been positive.
When David Morgenstern became a dad, he set out to find community. Specifically, he wanted to connect with other gay dads who understood the unique parenting situation he was in. This proved more difficult than he anticipated and he didn’t feel seen in today’s marketplace. “So I decided to create what I couldn’t find,” he explains.

Like all great entrepreneurs, he realized that he should work for himself, instead of someone else. “I learned a lot about flavor profiles, and how bitters work,” he explains, while also acknowledging that bitters is not, historically, something people often put a lot of thought into.
His voice was one of the things that was holding Alex back from transitioning. “I was so scared to lose my singing voice. That was a huge deal to me. Singing is everything to me. Now I realize that it’s more important than I ever even knew.”
My own love story began twenty years ago. I feel old admitting that. But if I have the good fortune to grow old, then I’m grateful to be doing that with my wife, Sam. As we face all of life’s little obstacles, including raising two boys, I am grateful for her sense of adventure and for the way she puts her family first.
