QUEER LISTEN
Gender Reveal: This Week in Seven Years of Past Futures of Gender
I am new to this podcast, which–you might notice from the title of this episode–has existed for seven years! What is Gender Reveal? Gender Reveal is a podcast that features nonbinary, genderqueer, transgender, and queer artists, activists, and educators.
Each episode ends with host Tuck Woodstock asking his guest
“In your ideal, what would the future of gender look like?” Through the years, Tuck has asked close to 200 people this question. In today’s episode, Tuck shares some answers from the show’s archives.
Tuck also reminds listeners that “the future for trans people has become even more precarious, less knowable.” In these moments of uncertainty, he reminds us, it becomes even more important to remind each other what our hopes and dreams for the future are.
For those of us concerned about the state of the world, and the adversity that LGBTQ+ and specifically trans people are facing in this country, this episode is the salve we need right now.
QUEER WATCH

Watch: Fellow Travelers on Hulu, Paramount+, Amazon Prime
I’ve been trying to stay away from the deep dark lately. If there is heartbreak or catastrophe or Nazis, please, I can’t handle it. But I watched this miniseries a few months back–a more hopeful time–and it has stuck with me.
Spanning from McCarthyism through the AIDS crisis and beyond, this historical romance meets political thriller is the kind of messy love story that will make you angry and hopeful and terribly sad.
The miniseries explores the relationship between two gay men through decades of political American upheaval and their own tumultuous lives. During a time when being outed could ruin their careers and their personal lives, Hawk and Tim, two government workers, each choose different paths. The series also follows the lives of their families and friends, examining themes like truth and regret, and the true cost of love.
Maybe love cannot conquer all, but it sure as hell is strong, resilient, and worth fighting for. The ending of Fellow Travelers is unlikely to leave you feeling better than when you began, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to look to the past and remember why we’re fighting for a better future.
I have not read the book by Thomas Mallon, on which the miniseries is based.
QUEER READ
When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson
Oh my goodness. I waited so long for this book, which was released in September 2024. Nelson is one of those writers with whom I simply know that whatever she produces, it is going to be exquisite. Her writing is weird and queer and bursting with emotion. It is complex and busy and colorful and alive, and as such, I feel more alive when I am reading her books. Whether I am laughing or crying, I am completely absorbed into whatever world she has created. I often think about her 2014 novel, I’ll Give You the Sun, so when I heard she had a new one on the horizon, I impatiently waited to get my hands on it. When the World Tips Over did not disappoint.
The novel follows the Falls family of Northern California. The three siblings couldn’t be more different, but they’re all still reeling from the long-ago disappearance of their father. A fixture in their hometown, no one has ever discovered where he went, or why he left.
When tragedy strikes, it becomes clear that now is the time for this broken family to find their way back together.
With road trips, rivalries, family curses, love stories within love stories within love stories, and sorrows and joys passed from generation to generation, this is the intricate, luminous tale of a family’s complicated past and present. And only in telling their stories can they hope to rewrite their futures.
With vivid prose and poetic storytelling, When the World Tips Over is heartbreaking, hopeful, and a timely reminder of the strength and necessity of human connection. .
