WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
This is our round-up of recommendations for our LGBTQ+ fam! Is there something you can’t stop talking about? A show you’re binging, a podcast that’s making you look forward to your commute? Maybe it’s a book that kept you up all night, a new lightweight tee, or a dainty pair of earrings.

QUEER LISTEN
Ethel Cain recently became the first out trans artist to earn a top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart with her 2022 alt-pop debut, Preacher’s Daughter. Not only is that exciting news, but, have you heard this album? It is excellent.
A singer and songwriter from a Southern Baptist family in Florida, Cain’s voice is ethereal, and her music has a dreamlike quality about it. Preacher’s Daughter is a blending of many genres, with a true Americana–which is my thing, guys–and indie-rock feel.
My fav tracks? “American Teenager” joins a long tradition of music about the quintessential teenage American experience, while “A House in Nebraska” is a haunting opus that I can’t help but play on repeat. A deacon’s daughter from the south? Who is trans? Cain must have endless material for her poetic lyrics.
Check out Ethel Cain wherever you stream your music, or grab Preacher’s Daughter on vinyl wherever you get your records.
QUEER WATCH
Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky
I really love Monica Lewinsky. She approaches all of her writing and appearances with a thoughtful voice, and for someone whose entire adult life has been defined by her very public shaming and resulting trauma, I appreciate the way she has embraced life in the public eye as an empathetic and understanding ear. She’s a successful producer–including a miniseries streaming on Hulu about the Lewinsky Scandal–and an activist.
I’m a huge fan of her new podcast: Reclaiming, (which you can also listen to here), and I recommend every single episode. But of course, her queer guests are my favorites: Alan Cumming, Kara Swisher, and Beanie Feldstein. As you’ll hear Monica say more than once, she doesn’t like small talk. She gets to the heart of her guests’ experiences, specifically, whatever it is they are working to reclaim in their lives.
Every episode has me chewing on some brilliant tidbit, and Monica herself is a generous and engaging host. Also, big shout-out to Cedar Lakes Estate, where, it should be noted, I was married over a decade before Beanie Feldstein tied the knot in Gucci and graced the pages of Vogue. Let’s just say my favorite wedding venue has upgraded their clientele through the years.
Why is this listed under Queer Watch? Because viewing these episodes–when the opportunity presents itself–offers an elevated experience of the interview.
QUEER READ
The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahaye by Briony Cameron
Last month I had the pleasure (and perhaps punishment) of going on a Disney Cruise with my family, and I wanted to lean into the experience with a book that would:
- Be breezy enough to read on the beach
- Embrace life on the high seas
- Be sapphic (duh, I may be on a Disney Cruise but I’m still gonna gay it up!)
- Feature a kick-ass feminist protagonist
Impossible, you say? Not with this swashbuckling thriller! You already know I love queer pirates, and Cameron took this to the next level with this tale of Caribbean piracy and romance. If blood, guts, and violence is not your thing, then I suggest you look away, but if you can stomach some land-and-sea battles, then this piece of historical fiction is for you.
QUEER GEAR
The Georgie Suit by Kirrin Finch
My wife Sam and I have both been wanting custom suits forever. We just never really have the occasion–or the money let’s be honest–to go for it. But now is honestly a great time to make the investment, as there are options flooding the market.
Sam is after a wider-leg pant with a vest to pair with sneaks or a loafer, and I want the perfect skinny-ish ankle pant (not easy when you’re 5’11”) to pair with with a sexy heel … probably the toe-numbing classic Louboutin pumps that I was gifted by an employer back when I was a nanny in NYC in my twenties.
Enter the Georgie Suit by Kirrin Finch, which is a super affordable option that is not quite custom, but is ready to be tailored for the perfect fit. Case-in-point, the pants come with an extra 2.5 inches of fabric in the hem for additional tailoring adjustments.
If you wanna go all-in with pants, vest, and blazer, you’re still spending under $800, and you have your choice of navy, chocolate, burgundy, olive, black, slate blue, charcoal, royal blue, sage, dusty mauve AND light gray. Personally, I’m after an olive three-piece look.
Kirrin Finch was founded in 2015 by Brooklyn-based couple Laura Moffat and Kelly Sanders Moffat to “meet the growing demand for gender-defying fashion by creating menswear-inspired apparel designed to fit a range of female and non-binary bodies”
Wedding season is coming, so if you’re looking for the perfect attire, check out Kirrin Finch.
