one thing is certain. we are survivors.
Okay, we’ve had a couple of weeks for this to sink in. And yet, I still haven’t accepted this reality. Every day the grief feels fresh and my heart breaks again as I prepare for what lies ahead.
Many of us are angry. And exhausted. And not ready for action. If, like me, you need to sit with your feelings for a damn minute, then you should listen to your body. You should let yourself feel the pain, whatever that looks like for you.
I feel like there’s really no positive spin I can put on an election that revealed the ugly truth: most Americans don’t care about your right to exist. Your right to protection under the law. The right to your body. Your marriage. Your family. Your freedom.
So, how do we move forward with this knowledge?
Originally, we here at Pink Robin thought we’d make some historical comparisons between Project 2025 and the autocratic regimes that have done this before. I’d ruminate on eliminating education, abortion bans, and Hitler youth. I’d talk nationalism and propaganda. I would spin a tale where the good guys win and justice prevails and we all live happily ever after. But that would be fiction. Because, as any marginalized Americans already know–and have always known–this nation has always been this way. Some class of people has always feared for their lives. None of this is new here.
So I’m not going to do any of that. Instead, I’m going to tell you that you are not alone, and that you have every right to feel scared and angry and disappointed. You have every right to end relationships with people whose values misalign with your own. You have every right to do whatever it takes to protect yourself and your loved ones.
In that spirit, I’ve included a small list of LGBTQ+ resources. Whatever your concern, I guarantee that you can find help with it here. As always, if you have any questions, or want to share your thoughts, reach out to me at La********@Pi***********.com .
- GLAAD has an extensive list that includes resources for youth, military, trans, and more.
- The National Council on Family Relations has a list that “provides a number of places for LGBTQ individuals, families, and others to find trained counselors, peer support, toolkits, fact sheets,” and more.
- The Trevor Project is always an excellent resource for LGBTQ+ individuals who are looking for assistance.
- Family Equality has a great list of resources for families and individuals, including information on second-parent adoption, which is a big topic for many LGBTQ+ families right now.
I’ll end with a statement from GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis:
“The LGBTQ community has been here before, as have all other marginalized communities, and the pain is real today. But as we saw from the Lavender Scare to the Stonewall riots, from the HIV epidemic to the defeat and victory for marriage, every breakdown can lead to a breakthrough. We must see this moment of crisis as another catalyst for change. Our community knows how to take care of each other, and how to push our country and world forward.”
