From them.: “On January 28, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to restrict gender-affirming care by removing coverage for gender-affirming care from federal health insurance policies, modifying requirements under the Affordable Care Act, and prohibiting hospitals or other medical providers who receive federal funding or accept Medicare or Medicaid from providing gender-affirming care to people under 19.”
What does this mean?
According to the Human Rights Campaign, “… While these orders generate a ton of headlines, confusion, and chaos, they cannot override the United States Constitution, federal laws, and established legal precedent.” The healthcare industry, however, has already taken action. NYU Langone Health in New York City, for instance, has already started cancelling appointments for gender-affirming care for youth.
Is anyone fighting this?
Yes.

NEW JERSEY LGBTQ+ ADVOCATES
Overview:
New Jersey is known for its tough pro-equality laws like New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD), which is considered one of the most comprehensive anti-discrimination laws in the country.
Since Garden State Equality’s founding in 2004, over “230 LGBTQ civil rights laws” have been enacted at the state, county, and local levels. According to the organization’s website, that’s “more laws in less time than in any other state in American history.”
NEW YORK STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL
Overview:
New York Attorney General Letitia James has informed hospitals that they would be violating state anti-discrimination laws if they stopped offering gender-affirming care to these patients.
A 2022 Williams Institute report found that an estimated 3% of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 who identify as transgender live in New York, meaning that the state has the highest population of trans youth in the country.

15 Democratic State AGs Stand by Gender-Affirming Care via The Advocate
Overview:
Fifteen state attorneys general, all Democrats, have issued a statement in support of gender affirming care.
“Health care decisions should be made by patients, families, and doctors, not by a politician trying to use his power to restrict your freedoms. Gender-affirming care is essential, life-saving medical treatment that supports individuals in living as their authentic selves … State attorneys general will continue to enforce state laws that provide access to gender-affirming care, in states where such enforcement authority exists, and we will challenge any unlawful effort by the Trump Administration to restrict access to it in our jurisdictions.”
The statement was endorsed by the attorneys general of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
